Damage That Your Gums Endure When You Eat Acidic FoodsYour teeth are strong, but they are definitely not indestructible. Eating acidic foods will take their revenge on your teeth and gums eventually.

Highly acidic foods are a known cause of sensitive teeth and have a negative impact on the health of your teeth's enamel and gum line. Acidic foods are the most common contributors to teeth and gum sensitivity.

Acidic Foods that Cause Gum Sensitivity and What Can You Do

Eating too many highly acidic foods can damage the tooth enamel and it weakens your gum line which in turn exposes the inner layer of your teeth. When the inner layer of your tooth is exposed, the nerve center is even more exposed, which leads to painful tooth sensitivity and weakens your gum line.

There are a number of foods that you should be cautious of that cause gum sensitivity such as meat, beans, most grains, corn, fish, fowl, coffee, plums, prunes, cranberries, sports drinks, orange juice, tomatoes, yogurt, sour cream, wine, sodas, most fermented foods and aged cheeses, fruits, and pickled products.

While acidic and alkaline foods each offer different qualities – both types are good for you in moderation, but that is the word to remember – moderation. If you enjoy these highly acidic foods, there are steps you can take to help reduce your tooth and gum discomfort. One of the best and simplest ways is simply to use a desensitizing toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Perhaps the best way to deal with your tooth sensitivity is to give our office a call and come in and talk to us about your diet. This includes the foods you are eating, the foods you enjoy, the foods you like and don't like. Let us take a look and find out what exactly may be going on in addition to your tooth and gum sensitivity issue and work up an oral hygiene care plan just for you to follow to get you on the right track. This way you can start enjoying your life again and your food, pain-free.
