Dental Implants FAQ
|
• | The implant screw – A small screw, usually made from titanium, that serves as the root of the prosthesis. The implant screw is surgically embedded into the jawbone and fuses to the bone during the process of osseointegration. |
• | The abutment – A support structure, made from titanium or zirconia, that links the implant screw to the restoration. Zirconia abutments have become increasingly popular because of superior esthetics. The abutment is typically placed after osseointegration is complete. The abutment cannot be placed until your jawbone is strong enough to support a restoration. However, the abutment can be placed at the same time as the implant screw in certain circumstances. |
• | The restoration – A prosthesis, typically made from porcelain or zirconia, that fills the place of a missing tooth. The prosthesis is fabricated in a dental laboratory using an impression of your mouth. These days, dental implants can support a wide variety of restorations, from a single crown to an entire arch of missing teeth. |
• | Superior esthetics – Implant-supported restorations look and feel just like your natural teeth. Porcelain and zirconia can be shaped to match the texture of natural teeth and possess the same light-reflecting properties as enamel. |
• | Superior Function – Implant-supported restorations will function just like your natural teeth. Unlike removable restorations, implants will never slip while you chew, speak, or laugh. Because the screw becomes a part of your bone, you are also able to eat your favorite foods with confidence and comfort. |
• | Superior comfort – Implants also eliminate the discomfort associated with partial and full dentures. |
• | Superior oral health – Implants are the only restoration that prevents future bone loss and encourages better oral health. Also, the restoration does not affect your surrounding teeth. |
